Statement: New CEACA Housing Project

The Shire of Merredin (the Shire) would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Central East Accommodation Care Alliance (CEACA) on successfully securing State and Federal Government funding to deliver 54 new modular social homes across the Wheatbelt. This is a fantastic outcome for the region, and the Shire remains fully supportive of CEACA’s ongoing commitment to helping local residents age in place.

Following recent news coverage, the Shire wishes to clarify that no new housing units from this funding allocation will be constructed within our local government area.
The Shire has a strong history of supporting senior housing, having previously provided both land and funding for the existing 27 CEACA units. In addition, the Shire directly manages its own retirement village, offering 26 subsidised units and 3 detached houses, to ensure local seniors have access to affordable, quality housing.
While the Shire offered additional land to support CEACA’s latest housing program, we were unable to contribute the additional financial capital requested for these new builds. The Shire is still making repayments towards the loans from the initial round of housing infrastructure. Furthermore, as the Shire does not own the CEACA units, collect rates from them, or receive returns when units are sold, responsible long-term financial management means we must balance further investments carefully.
Looking ahead, the Shire’s primary strategic focus is on developing Shire-owned residential properties. This initiative aims to provide affordable rental housing for key service workers and apprentices; a crucial step in supporting our local economy and driving the town's future growth.
We wish CEACA every success with this project and look forward to seeing these much-needed homes come to fruition across the Wheatbelt.
