New RV Dump Point

The Shire of Merredin will be installing a brand-new dump point on the west side of the Barrack Street carpark, located near the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre. This site will provide a convenient and environmentally safe way for RV owners to dispose of wastewater while visiting our town.

Civil works to connect sewer and water pipes have been completed, allowing us to open the junction at Barrack Street. The area surrounding the dump point installation is still an active work site, and we ask the public to avoid the area.

More Information:

Site Investigation: The dump point location has been subject of numerous Council Briefings over the past 18 months. Several sites were considered, but were discounted due to costs, lack of connection to sewer and water, or constrained access to the dump point. The site opposite the Merredin CRC was evaluated but ultimately not selected for two major reasons:

  • Unlike the selected site near the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre, the area opposite the Merredin CRC does not have an existing connection to the sewer system or a dedicated water connection. Establishing these utilities at that location would have severely impacted the project's budget.
  • The site is also listed on the State Contaminated Sites Database due to the historical use of the adjacent building. Undertaking any excavation there for tanks or sewer connections would require extensive environmental investigations, soil sampling, and other regulatory approvals. This process would have caused significant delays to the project and more than doubled the total cost.

Consultation: The Merredin Cinema Café and were consulted in relation to the dump point while site selection was in progress to seek their thoughts, and ultimately amended the location based on their feedback.

Chosen Location: The selected location allows for connection to sewer and water. Sewer connection means that there aren’t any tanks which require additional servicing and maintenance, or ongoing pump-out costs. Having water provided at the site allows for users to flush the area after use, as well as enabling Shire staff to undertake regular cleaning which assists with minimising potential odour and maintaining the area.

The site will also be screened which will allow for ventilation, while minimising visual impact.

The site location supports the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre, as it is conveniently located so that RV’s can use both the dump point and access visitor information. The site is located at an existing designated RV parking area.

Councillors are more than happy to discuss these matters, with their contact details being available on the Shire website www.merredin.wa.gov.au/councillors
