The Shire of Merredin has secured $2,139,309 dollars in grant funding through the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) Round 5.
The BBRF funding will meet a substantial part of the cost of upgrading the main streets of Barrack and Bates and the adjacent parkland to transform Merredin's town centre.
Shire President Julie Flockart expressed her excitement over the news.
“We are thrilled to secure this grant which will see the Council deliver Stage 1 of our CBD Redevelopment Project, which was first envisaged in 2007,” she said.
“During engagement on our new Strategic Community Plan, the community once again expressed an overwhelming desire to see a refreshed and vibrant town centre for people to enjoy.”
Temporary CEO Mark Dacombe said; “In order to apply for this funding the project had to be shovel ready. This has taken much dedication and long hours by a very small team of staff working with consultants.”
Features of the CBD Redevelopment include a dedicated events space, as well as new toilet facilities, greenery, and an early year’s playground.
“Our plan is that the Merredin town centre becomes a draw card for locals and visitors alike, providing significant economic and social benefits for Merredin for many years to come,” Shire President Flockart said.
The Shire of Merredin will be matching the grant funding amount, with approximately $4.5m in total for the development.
