Emergencies happen - and it's time to get prepared!

Join the DFES, Red Cross and the Shire of Merredin on Thursday, 2 May 2024 to build your communities capacity to respond to hazards.

Workshops

2:00pm - 3:30pm     Emergency Ready

Emergency Ready is an all-hazards, disaster preparedness workshop. Working with the RediPlan booklet participants will learn the steps required to create an emergency plan, including:

  • Preparing mentally for the stress of an emergency
  • Understand hazards that may affect them
  • Knowing where and how to get relevant information before, during and after an emergency event
  • Packing an emergency kit
  • The importance of connecting into a personal support network

Participants will learn how to reduce the impacts of emergencies, big or small, by being prepared. Learn the four steps you can use to be prepared.

4:00pm - 5:30pm     Supporting the Supporter

Supporting communities during and after emergency events can be stressful. People involved in emergency response and recovery are often in everyday roles that support the community and may be personally affected by the emergency. The Supporting the Supporters workshop is a practical session that examines typical reactions communities and individuals have to disasters, the typical trajectory of recovery for communities, the impact of stress on the mind and body, and practical ways you can support your own wellbeing in post emergency and recovery environments. This workshop covers:

  • What working in recovery environment is like.
  • How to support the community in a recovery environment.
  • Self-care and wellbeing.
  • Basic Psychological First Aid
