MEDIA RELEASE: MERREDIN REGIONAL COMMUNITY AND LEISURE CENTRE SERVICE TO BE PROVIDED IN-HOUSE

Published on Friday, 25 August 2023 at 2:54:10 PM

The management of the Merredin Regional Community and Leisure Centre (MRCLC) will change hands later this year, with the Shire of Merredin (the Shire) set to directly provide the service, instead of the outsourced model which has been in place for the last seven years.

This decision has come following the August Ordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 22 August 2023, where the Shire Council considered the tender submissions received for the Operations of the MRCLC.

After in depth discussions regarding the future of the facility, Council resolved to decline all tender submissions received and instructed the Chief Executive Officer to bring the MRCLC facility back under the management of the Shire.

While the final handover date of the facility is yet to be confirmed, the Shire is in early discussions with current contractor, Belgravia Leisure, to agree upon transitional arrangements and timeframes that will ensure minimal disruptions during the handover for community and sporting groups.

Once confirmed, the date the Shire will take over operations, along with any other arrangements, will be released.

Shire President Mark McKenzie said he trusts the community will support Councils decision to bring the MRCLC service in-house, and throughout the transition arrangements.

“The scope of service going forward is based on extensive community consultation and an independent review undertaken over a full 12-month period. Based on the feedback, it is Councils view that this change is in the best interests of the Merredin community,” he said.

He continued; “We look forward to working with facility users and our sporting community to ensure the success of the MRCLC [facility] and its services in the future.”

In the meantime, the Shire will commence the recruitment process for several positions at the MRCLC, with local applicants encouraged to apply.

The Shire would like to extend our appreciation to Belgravia Leisure for their commitment to the Merredin sporting community, and delivery of the service over the past seven years. During this time, Belgravia Leisure have delivered 2,500 swimming lessons, over 22,800 attendances for casual visits and programs, as part of their pledge to keep our community active.
