Recycling

Although the Shire of Merredin has introduced compulsary kerbside recycling for residents it continues to support the Merredin Lions Club in the operation of their Mary Street Recycling Depot (entry off Barrack Street) facility. Items such as aluminium cans, plastic bottles, glass, newspapers and old vehicle batteries can be deposited at the site.  Local businesses and those residents outside the townsites are encouraged to utilise this service.

Kerbside Recycling

Every resident is entitled to a 240L recycling bin, serviced twice monthly from properties within the townsites of Merredin, Burracoppin, Hines Hill and Nangeenan.  For residents on the south side (towards Bruce Rock) of Merredin who are west of South Street of the Gt Eastern Hwy, the collection occurs on the 1st and the 3rd Thursday of the month.  For residents on the south side (towards Bruce Rock) of Merredin who are east of South Street of the Gt Eastern Hwy, the collection occurs on the 2nd and the 4th Thursday of the month.  For residents on the north side of Merredin (towards Nungarin) of the Gt Eastern Hwy, the collection occurs on the 1st and the 3rd Thursday of the month.  For residents in Burracoppin the collection is on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month and for the residents in Hines Hill & Nangeenan the collection is on the 2nd and 4th  Thursday of the month.

Rubbish Service

A weekly compulsory rubbish removal service is conducted throughout the townsites of Merredin Shire.

  • Merredin – Thursday
  • Burracoppin – Monday
  • Muntadgin – Friday
  • Hines Hill – Thursday

This collection is for one bin per household per week. Bins are not provided by the Shire and can be purchased from Two Dogs Home Hardware (Ph: 9041 1078) or Avon Waste (Ph: 9641 1318).  If you wish to arrange for a second bin to be picked up, please contact the Shire on (08) 9041 1611.
Waste Transfer Stations service the towns of Burracoppin and Muntadgin. Personal access to these stations is available at all reasonable times.

Landfill and Resource Recovery Site

Council manages the Merredin Landfill and Resource Recovery Site, located 5km northeast of the Merredin Townsite along Chandler Road, in line with the recycling and reuse philosophy outlined in the Waste Management Strategy. The site operates within certain hours and controlled conditions and is locked outside of these core hours.  The sire is available for disposal of refuse during the following times:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday1.00pm – 5.30pm
Wednesday8.00am – 1.00pm
Sunday10.00am – 5.30pm

Please note: That the Shire of Merredin has sole rights to the salvage at the site and will not be allowing any scavenging.

Care should be taken when transporting loads of refuse to the landfill site to ensure that it does not blow off or fall from the vehicle being used.  Remember that littering is an offence that attracts severe penalties.

Disposal Fees: Disposal Fees apply to bulk unsorted refuse, asbestos and controlled liquid waste.  Fees are adjusted annually and can be found in the schedule of Fees and Charges within Council's Budget.

Asbestos: Admittance to the Landfill and Resource Recovery Site to dispose of Asbestos will not be granted without evidence of a paid Asbestos Disposal Record.  These must be paid at the Administration Centre during normal office hours prior to taking asbestos waste to the landfill site.

Tree Lopping: Tree roots, etc., have a specific area set aside. Green Waste can be dumped free of charge.

Car Bodies: Car bodies have a specific area set aside.  This allows for easier recycling.

Tyres: Tyres of any sort will not be received at the landfill site.

Waste Oil: Waste oil disposal facilities are located at the Muntadgin Waste Transfer Station and at the Merredin Landfill and Resource Recovery Site.

Members of the public should not put any of the above in the excavated pit. Old tanks, fencing wire and metals of all types can be recycled and may be disposed of at the recycling point.
